Open University Design Show - With A Difference

On Thursday 25th June, the Open University hosted their annual degree Design Show however this year with a bit of a difference. Given the current COVID Pandemic, the course tutors and staff felt that it wasn’t safe to invite their students and guests to a physical event. However, it wasn’t an opportunity to be missed… The staff and students all got together and decided that with a nation now used to working from home, online webinars and zoom quizzes they could still present their work that they have all worked so hard on. More than 60 people attended the OU design show online event.

One of our top designers Ben, was approached by some of the staff to deliver a guest speech and Q&A session for the students. The key focus for the talk was his design experience following his departure from university, how he started in the staircase industry and a typical day designing stairs for MSC. The talk also touched on how business has changed for MSC within the pandemic and how it has affected the design process. The Q&A session was incredibly engaging and the students had some great questions, great to see so much interest in what we do.

We were really impressed with all of the work that was presented at the design show, with such a variety of engaging ideas. From a music player designed to ignite the memory of dementia sufferers, to a Fold Away desk as an Ikea hack. All projects seemed to address key issues in a modern society with very plausible solutions for each. All of the projects have been displayed brilliantly through their design catalogue, created by the Design Show team.

The Open University is an incredible establishment, providing further education opportunities to individuals whose circumstances prevent them from fitting into the complexities of traditional university courses.
