■ Introduction
Designed to be featured in the newly curated, MAMOTH Gallery in central London, this project was one of the more contemporary designs to date. Based on our Carbon design, the architect and gallery owner were looking for a minimal design to suit the nature of the gallery whilst not detracting from the artwork. Using a folded steel tread system, the builder was able to lay their own Terrazzo tiles over top. This was paired with a fabricated steel frame with Formica panels.

■ The Challenge
This staircase occupies a space with a glass roof and large upper windows, flooding the area with natural light. The client wanted the treads to be tiled, and the architects wished to introduce bespoke balustrade panels with brass brackets, all while maintaining a clean, minimal aesthetic that complements the luminous space.

■ The Solution
A folded steel system was engineered to support tiled treads while remaining visually light. The structure allows the architects’ custom balustrade panels to be mounted seamlessly with brass brackets, integrating their design vision. Styled in crisp white, the staircase reflects the abundant natural light that enhances the gallery’s contemporary atmosphere.

What are the regulations for the space between treads on open risers?
Legally, the gap between treads must not exceed 100mm. And the good news is that any of our styles can have open treads!
How does the stair fit to the floor?
All our stringers feature a precision engineered foot plate for a secure connection. We recommend either fixing the staircase directly to the structural slab, or shuttering out a space where the staircase will connect and installing or pouring a concrete pad for it to sit on. The foot plate is designed with countersunk holes for heavy duty concrete screws, along with through-holes for chemical anchors where required. This dual fixing approach ensures a secure, rigid connection to the floor slab.
What style staircase can have open treads?
All of our styles can feature open treads, creating a visually light and elegant look. Open risers work best when there’s an open space or architectural feature behind, allowing light to flow and enhancing the sense of space. If there’s just a wall behind, the effect can feel heavy or dark — in this case, a closed tread design might be better and could also provide the opportunity for clever under-stair storage.
What timber options do you have?
Our most popular timber option is Oak, which we stock in large quantities. However, we can also source other timbers such as Walnut, Ash, and a variety of others upon request. If you're looking for a specific wood, just let us know, and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs. Please note that lead times may vary depending on availability.
Do stairs increase home value?
Yes, well-designed stairs can increase the value of your home. A visually appealing staircase can serve as a focal point in your interior, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space. Staircases that are both stylish and functional-especially when they maximize space or create a unique feature-are attractive to potential buyers. Investing in a high-quality, custom staircase can be a great way to enhance your home's appeal and potential resale value.
How long does a steel staircase last?
A well-maintained steel staircase can last for decades due to its durability and resistance to wear and tear. Steel is highly resistant to corrosion, especially when properly coated with protective finishes, ensuring long-term strength and stability. Regular care, such as cleaning and checking for any wear on finishes or connections, will help extend the lifespan of your staircase even further.
What non-slip options do you offer for the treads?
We offer several non-slip solutions to enhance safety without compromising on style: Grip Strips – Discreet anti-slip inserts embedded into the treads. Textured Finishes – A lightly brushed or grooved surface for added traction. Anti-Slip Coatings – A clear or tinted treatment applied to the tread surface.
What powder coat finishes are available for your metal stairs?
We can powder coat your metal staircase in any RAL colour, giving you complete flexibility to match your design vision. Our most popular choice is Anthracite, but we can accommodate any RAL shade to suit your space.
Do you offer custom handrail designs?
Yes! We offer fully custom handrail designs to complement your staircase and match your style preferences. Whether you’re looking for a a classic timber profile, or something completely unique, our design team can create a handrail that fits seamlessly with your staircase. Get in touch to discuss your ideas, and we’ll help bring your vision to life.
What safety regulations apply to the glass used in your staircases?
We follow strict safety standards to ensure durability and compliance: With a handrail – We use 12mm toughened glass for strength and reliability. Without a handrail – We use 17.5mm laminated glass for added safety and structural integrity. Our glass options are designed to meet building regulations while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic. Let us know your preferences, and we’ll ensure the best fit for your staircase.
What tread thickness options are available?
Tread thickness varies depending on the staircase design: Closed, Zig-Zag, or Sawtooth Stringers – Standard tread thickness is 32mm. However, if you prefer a flush finish with rebated tread tabs, we can provide a 40mm option. Central Spine Staircases – Our oak treads for this design have a substantial 112mm thickness, offering a bold and striking look. If you have specific design preferences, our team can discuss custom options to achieve the perfect aesthetic and structural balance.
